Sad

My first foray into more complicated knitting after scarves and other rectangle/square objects was the umbilical cord hat in Stitch 'n Bitch. I was too chicken to venture on my own, so x_h00ine and I found proper yarn and tools and cast on together, discovering the excitement that was knitting in the round.

I have since knit 3 umbilical hats. For whom? Good question. I have no proper baby recipient. I was thinking of donating them to the visiting nurse association so they could be given as gifts for newborns.

I unfortunately have the perfect baby to give my spring green version of the hat to. One of my patients came to her routine ultrasound appointment at 20 weeks to find out that the baby was no longer alive. Lots of sadness and tears later, we're on day 2 of her induction so that she can deliver her little one. Even though it's too big, I wanted to give her and her husband the hat. I worked through some of my sadness on a pair of booties to match and presented them yesterday as we settled her in for a long few days. Happy to say they loved them. Altogether, so sad, though. I think this is one of the worst things we have to do, help people through the death of their baby. And our sadness only pales in comparison to their grief.

Hopefully cheerier posts to come ... I have 2 quilts near completion and will post pictures when I have them.
